Los Compadres Cantina is expected to be another Oak Street family favorite in Roanoke. Founded by Jack Layman and Jose Mendez, Los Compadres has a scratch and “daily fresh’’ kitchen with Tex-Mex style cuisine. The restaurant’s target open date was May 15, 2020. Due to COVID set-backs, it officially opens to the public on Thursday, June 4th.
Here is what you can expect when you dine at Los Compadres Cantina.
This restaurant has a “cozy feel”, with warm woods and fire concepts. The thought and detail put into this space will transport you away from Texas. An open scratch kitchen will welcome guests upon entry.
“We want to marry the really good Tex-Mex cuisine and delicious drinks, so both can be enjoyed in a family friendly place”, says Jack Layman.
The outside architecture of this building stands all on its own. Created by RGA Architects, the beautiful features and enticing entrance will lure you inside to investigate more. Patio lovers are well taken care of, with more fire features, and drop-down curtains for the ability to heat and cool. A banquet room will be available for private parties. Los Compadres Cantina will be fun and welcoming to families. “We want to see kids in the restaurant,” Jack Layman shares. Layman and Mendes plan to focus celebrations around National Margarita Day (February 22), Cinco de Mayo (May 5) and the Day of the Dead (October 31-November 2).
Co-founder Jose Mendes has brought generational family recipes and new signature entrees.
Kitchen manager Alex Davila has been in the Tex-Mex restaurant business since 1979 and has a history working with Mi Cocina, Ana Mia’s, and Baja. Alex Davila gave us a preview of the Tex-Mex cuisine at Los Compadres Cantina.
“You can expect to enjoy street tacos, Carne Asada and your favorite Tex-Mex staples” says Alex Davila.
One lunch dish you’re sure to enjoy is a grilled chicken breast topped with sautéed spinach and goat cheese. Customers can enjoy table-side guacamole and desserts.” Alex Davila promises top-of-the-line from beginning to end. Life In 76262 recommends trying the Ensalada de Snapper, a grilled chile-dusted snapper over a bed of avocados, tomatoes, pickled red onions, pepitas, and fresh jalapenos. Served with avocado ranch. Perfect for summer!
Margaritas will be the best in town, made from scratch with fresh squeezed ingredients. The bar will have a plethora of high-end tequilas, whiskeys and bourbons.
Other unique-dining aspects will be specialty infused tequilas, including pineapple and jalapeno. Several Mexican imported beers, draft beers and fountain drinks will be served.
